Flu Advice

There is currently an increase in flu-like viruses circulating in the community. Symptoms can vary, but many people experience fever, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, runny or blocked nose, and sometimes vomiting, particularly in children. Most cases improve on their own within 5–7 days, although cough and tiredness can last longer.

How to Manage Symptoms at Home

  • Rest and keep well-hydrated. Small, frequent sips can help if you feel nauseous or have been vomiting.
  • Take paracetamol or ibuprofen (if normally safe for you) to help with fever, headaches, and body aches.
  • Speak to local Pharmacy on products to ease cough and congestion.
  • Avoid close contact with others, especially vulnerable people (older adults, pregnant individuals, or those with long-term health conditions).
  • Stay home until your fever has settled and you feel well enough to resume normal activities.

When to Seek Help

Contact a GP or 111 urgently if:

  • Symptoms are not improving after 5–7 days or are getting worse.
  • You cannot keep fluids down, have persistent vomiting, or feel dehydrated.
  • You have a very high fever, severe sore throat, or worsening cough.
  • You are unable to drink enough due to nausea/vomiting or feeling too unwell.
  • You have an underlying health condition (e.g., asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, lowered immunity) and feel you are deteriorating.
  • You develop ear pain, sinus pain, or symptoms suggesting a secondary infection.

Seek emergency medical help immediately if you develop:

  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or chest pain.
  • Blue lips, pale/clammy skin, severe drowsiness, or confusion.
  • Signs of severe dehydration (very little urine, dizziness, fainting, very dry mouth).
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed.
  • Symptoms that feel sudden, severe, or worrying.

Prevention Tips

  • Regular handwashing or using hand sanitiser.
  • Cover coughs/sneezes and dispose of tissues promptly.
  • Stay home when unwell.
  • Keep up to date with flu vaccinations if eligible.
